The brief from Plan was simple and difficult: how can we inspire Swedish teens to engage in stopping child marriage? Our idea was to contrast the luxury of choosing your own path, with the horror of not having any say in your own future. Presented through an interactive love story, released on Valentine's Day.
A 5 minute interactive experience to make teens engage in a painful and difficult subject? No sweat! Young people have always fought tooth and nail for a better future and a better world. Who are we to say teenagers only care about 15 second clips and spoon-fed experiences?
We worked with a reference group of high school students to make sure the storytelling, design and the tone was on point. Through them and Plans deep knowledge about the realities of girls globally, we gained new perspectives which helped us avoid playing into existing norms and prejudice.
The interactive film lets the audience choose their own path through the story, in classic choose-your-own-adventure style. With on-going analysis throughout the production, we could tweak and refine the final result to make sure it was as engaging as possible.
Through our curiosity about the experiences of young people both in Sweden and globally we could craft a colorful project that had a deep impact in the target audience. More than half of the tens of thousands people who pressed play stuck around for the full 5 minutes to arrive in the landing page to engage with Plans global work to support young girls. That’s seriously cool.
